Alaska Day 10

Today was a day in Anchorage to rest, get Dwayne's prop inspected and repaired, and to explore Anchorage. After a delicious, leisurely breakfast, Dwayne started making phone calls, procured a rental car and drove to the airport to meet a mechanic. Doug had his office set up and was taking care of business. Jim and Ken met up with Jim's son Thad, a new FedEx captain on an Anchorage layover, and walked around down town before having lunch.

After the prop issue was promptly addressed and repaired, the afternoon was spent largely touring and enjoying Lake Hood, the world's largest seaplane base, boasting about 200 daily operations. With Alaska's vast spaces, its many lakes and streams make ideal landing strips. Float planes are wildly  popular. We noticed by their numbers that C-185s and Super Cubs were the backcountry airplanes of choice. Many of these are rigged for floats or tundra tires or skis depending on the season or the need. What a Mecca for back country flying! :)

Maule on Floats! :)

Rested up and refreshed from a day of little planned activity, we had a nice dinner, and retired for the evening. Tomorrow it's "South in Alaska" as we discover and explore the Kenai Peninsula.
